Learning Opportunities through the Mentor for a Day Program

Student members are invited to participate in the MFAD that is organized for the second time during Posidonia and aspires to fill in the gap between students and exhibiting companies by bringing them together through a ‘Mentor’. Mentors will share their experience with you, impart their knowledge, pay a visit to booths of their choice and answer questions. As of today, the following professionals have confirmed their participation. Their exact time slots will be announced over the next couple of weeks.

Georgios Bourtoulis, Technical Manager at Eurotankers Inc. Having graduated in 1990 from the University of Glasgow with a Beng (Honours) in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, he joined the University of Newcastle getting his Msc in Marine Engineering in 1991, while his dissertation was carried out at the TU DELFT in Holland. He is a ΤΕΕ member and an active member with SNAME (Greek section, papers committee Chair), IMarEST and Martecma-Greece. He commenced his career in Ship repairs / drydocks at DOVANKO MARINE INC since the early ’90s and up to 2004. Then he moved into ship management starting with TRISTAR MANAGEMENT LTD up to May 2013 and since then he is the Technical Manager at EUROTANKERS INC. During the academic years 2015–18, he delivered a set of lectures at the University of Piraeus, for the postgraduate students of the department of Maritime Studies. He is also member of the Greek Technical Committees of DNV GL and BV.

Richard Adrian Gilmore, is Director Gas Fleet for Maran Gas Maritime Inc., the LNG shipping unit of the Angelicoussis Shipping Group Limited. Maran has 26 LNG ships in operation, with 8 LNG ships plus 1 FSRU under construction. Mr. Gilmore’s career in the LNG shipping industry spans over 30 years, covering LNG ship design and construction, operations, and finance. At Maran, Mr. Gilmore oversees the management of the gas fleet and participates in the new business development activities. Richard Gilmore received a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture from Webb Institute and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Harilaos Petrakakos, is a Marine Consultant since 1977. He has successfully supported owners, banks and insurance companies with his expertise in Ship Building, Marine Claims, Technical Management. He has lectured Shipyards in Shipbuilding Quality and Shipbuilding Contracts. He has handled successfully and protected our principals’ interests throughout the world. He is a graduate of MIT with an M.Sc., in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and one in Shipping and Shipbuilding Management. He has been and is advising many Greek and Foreign based shipping firms in their choices of energy efficiency and acts as external auditor for owners and private equity funds to assess the assets (ships) condition. He is a member of SNAME since 1975, ELINT since 1980, The Propeller Club of Piraeus the Piraeus Association for Maritime Arbitration and MIT Alumni Club of Greece. He is one of the founders of MIT Enterprise Forum in Greece.

Iliana Christodoulou-Varotsi, is a legal consultant (member of the Athens Bar Association), and accredited commercial mediator. Experienced law drafter and industry trainer specialised in regulatory compliance in shipping working with Lloyd’s Maritime Academy (Informa group) and an international ship classification society after a multiyear exposure to maritime and EU law in academia. Visiting lecturer at ALBA Graduate Business School American College of Greece. Areas of expertise (legal services and training) incorporate a proactive approach to regulations with managerial and industry best practice insights: maritime safety, marine pollution prevention, maritime labour standards, carriage of goods by sea, marine insurance, EU law and policies. Authorship, amongst others, of five books including: “Marine Pollution Control: Legal and Managerial Frameworks” in Lloyd’s Practical Shipping Guides (Informa Law from Routledge, 2018). Graduate of the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne (France). Holder of a post-graduate degree (D.E.A.) in European and international law from the same University. Doctor of Laws with the highest distinction (Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne). Post-doctoral research experience (Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law).

John Kokarakis, is a graduate in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (1979). He also holds graduate degrees from the University of Michigan (MSE 83, MSE 84 and PhD 86). His doctoral dissertation was in the design of marine risers for oil exploration and production in very deep water. He worked in various projects worldwide as a consultant and technical investigator of maritime accidents and failures. Some of the most notorious were the explosion of Space Shuttle Challenger, the grounding of Exxon Valdez, the explosion and fire of Piper Alpha, the capsize of drillship Sea-Crest in the Gulf of Thailand and others. Furthermore, he was a consultant of Sea-Land, American President Lines and Matson Navigation for numerous aspects of containership design, operation and repair. He has extensive experience in ship design and operations, spanning over forty years. He is currently working at Bureau Veritas in charge of technical development. His work focuses on the implementation of the “green” regulations with specialization in fuel saving techniques, energy efficiency and speed optimization, hydrodynamic optimization, resistance and propulsion, performance monitoring, ship design, machinery and safety, education and training, asset integrity management and alternative fuels.

BSc Naval Architecture & Marine Engineer, University of Sunderland, UK 1977; Diploma with two year studies in Shipping & Shipbroking from City of London University 1974; Degree in macroeconomics from University of Economics, Athens; Chief Superidentent and Technical Manager at Polembros Marine Co. in London & Piraeus,1977-1999; Manager at Universe Maritime Co. in Athens 1999-2002; General Manager of ELKCO Group of Companies in Piraeus, 2002-2007; Chief Operating Officer of Phoenix Energy Navigation S.A., 2007- 2014 Director Technical Department Polembros Shipping Limited 2014- now.

Anthi Miliou, is the Area Business Development Manager, Greece & Cyprus, in Lloyd’s Register, Marine & Offshore. She previously held the position of Area Consultancy Manager following a number of other consultancy roles, expanding the business through working closely with the Greek shipping community and wider industry stakeholders. Anthi holds a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics from the Department of Aeronautics of Imperial College London and an MSc in Marine Engineering from University College London. Anthi has completed her undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at Princeton University, USA. She is the author of a number of scientific papers that were published in refereed academic journals and conference proceedings. Anthi has delivered presentations in industry fora and committees and chaired in industry conferences.

Panagiotis Mitrou, is a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer NTUA, holding an MBA in Shipping from ALBA Business School. He is currently employed as a Technology & Innovation Manager for Lloyd’s Register Marine & Offshore, South Europe. He focuses on uptake of technology, forthcoming legislation, innovation and compliance challenges. During his seven-year service with Lloyd’s Register Piraeus Technical Support Office, he had been dealing with series of statutory and other reviews. He has supported and leaded the implementation of several pieces of new legislation ranging from Ballast Water management to the latest Energy management related requirements. He has also been deeply involved in MARPOL and the Chemical codes matters. He has represented Lloyd’s Register in a number of international forums, research and other projects developed within the TEN-T and other EU frameworks. He is currently involved in the roll out and materialisation of special projects like Poseidon Med, CYnergy and elemed.

Panos Zachariadis, is Technical Director of Atlantic Bulk Carriers Management Ltd since 1997. His 35 year shipping experience spans diverse areas including sea service in bulk carriers and oil tankers,dry dock repairs, new-building supervision, ship operations and chartering. He holds a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering and a MSE degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan. He has been attending IMO since 2004 as a member of the Greek delegation. He was extensively involved with IMO’s Goal Based Standards and the Greek study which reversed the IMO decision to make double hull bulk carriers mandatory, while he was instrumental in the development of the new IMO ballast tank coating standard (PSPC). Currently he is involved in the new IMO environmental regulations for ships.Together with major shipyards he has applied numerous energy saving ideas, some of which have become industry standards. He has written numerous technical guides, papers and articles and has been awarded the 2011 Efkranti Shipping Personality award for promoting Greek Shipping internationally, the 2017 Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners Association "Shipping Personality" award and the 2017 Lloyd's List "Achievement in Safety or Environmental Protection" award. Member of Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and Union of Greek Shipowners technical committees, BIMCO Marine Committee, ABS European Technical Committee, LR Technical Committee, ASME, SNAME, BOD HELMEPA and MARTECMA.

Elias Kariambas, is Director, Global Ships Systems Centre in ABS, based in Piraeus. He joined ABS in 2012, as Technology and Business Development Manager for the Eastern Region in Europe. Prior joining ABS, Dr. Kariambas worked for 17 years as an Engineer and Manager at the plan approval office of Bureau Veritas in Piraeus. He graduated from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) as a Naval Architect- Marine Engineer, holding also a Ph.D in Ship Design from NTUA, as well as an MSc in Business Administration from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB).
