The academic year 2017-2018 was, a very active and productive period for SNAME-NTUA and its members. In that frame, as a Section, we would like to congratulate 3 of our student-members who were honored from SNAME, by receiving a scholarship. Attached below, you can find their short CV’s as well as the kind of scholarship, they managed to acquire.
Dimitris Georgiadis graduated from the five year study program of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) of National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 2016. During his studies, he showed eagerness to subjects dealing with Ship and Offshore Structures. As part of his studies, he undertook an internship and worked in the Technical Department of Halkidon Shipping Corporation.
Having completed his diploma thesis, in 2016, he received the Best Diploma Thesis Award of the year, at the technical meeting presented to the Greek Section of Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), where graduate students from NAME present their thesis. He is the first Greek student honored with the international Undergraduate Paper Honor Prize, with his paper: ‘‘Conversion of an Oil Tanker into FPSO: Strength and Reliability Assessment’’ awarded by SNAME at the Annual Maritime Convention at Houston in 2017.
He currently works as a PhD Student and Researcher at the division of Marine Structures of NAME under the supervision of Professor Emmanuel Samuelides, on the subject of: ‘‘Structural Reliability Assessment of ship-shaped vessels in Accidental Limit States’’.
Finally he is the 2018 Walter M. & Doris H. Maclean Scholarship recipient.
Dimitris Vekios has been studying at the National Technical University of Athens from 09/2014, towards a Ptychion degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering(GPA 8.13/10). He has also been attending parallel studies at the DEREE – The American College of Greece towards a Minor in Finance(GPA 4.0/4.0) and has received the Stavros Niarchos Foundation scholarship. Moreover he was awarded full scholarship by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the American College of Greece to attend summer school at the Imperial College Business School in London, where he completed Corporate Finance course.
He interned at Lomar Shipping Limited in London from 01/2018 to 05/2018 under the Libra Internship Program. He worked at the Technical and Operations Departments and undertook several tasks. He also interned at Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement S.A. in Athens from 8/2017 to 10/2017, where he worked at the Technical Department too.
In 2017 he was awarded scholarship by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), based on academic excellence criteria, achievements and prospects on Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering fields.
He is one of SNAME’s Undergraduate Scholarship recipients in 2018.
Eleni Kourkoulioti has already finished her undergraduate studies and presented her Diploma Thesis in March 2018. Thus, she is holding her certificate with a grade point average 7.8 (evaluation scale 0-10).
She entered the school, scoring at the Greek national exams of the year 2012 a grade of 18.929 out of 20. Eleni had already passed all the required subjects of the department since the 4 th year of her studies and completed an Internship at the Class Society “DNV – GL” and especially at the Research & Developer- Advisory department, to enhance her CV and gain working experience. During this job, she was working on computational platforms, for the optimal operation of tanker ships’ energy systems.
Since January 2018 she started working for a large shipping management company “Eastern Mediterranean Ltd”. Her specialization is the TMSA (Tanker Management System Assessment) and the evaluation of KPI’s. However, she pays a lot of time to manage the operation and solve the technical problems of six bulk carriers, in cooperation with a senior superintendent.
At the same time she is participating at the master program of the University of Piraeus with title “Marine Industry & Shipping Management”.
She is one of 2018 SNAME’s Graduate Scholarship recipients.
